De La Salle University extended its winning streak to five yesterday as it demolished University of the Philippines, 82-60, in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
In the second game, Far Eastern University nipped University of the East 71-69, to claim third spot with a 4-1 card.
Playing their first game after a shooting incident involving key player Mac Baracael, the Tamaraws broke a 66-66 deadlock with 36 seconds left via a drive by Mark Barroca.
The Tamaraws, who came into the contest with a round #12 patch, Baracael’s jersey number, sewn on their uniform, then made several stops in the endgame to send the Warriors to their third loss in six outings.
Benedict Fernandez hit three of his five tries from the arch to amass 19 points for FEU which had JR Cawaling adding 12 points, Marlon Adolfo adding nine points and Aldrich Ramos chipping in eight.
"Kahit wala kaming halos preparation gawa nung nangyari, desire talaga ang nagpanalo sa amin," FEU head coach Glen Capacio said. "Pero ang importante sa amin parang nag-champion kami dahil sa awa ng Diyos ligtas na si Mac (Baracael)."
In the first game, the Green Archers banked on James Mangahas, Rico Maierhofer and Hyram Bagatsing in handing the Fighting Maroons their fifth straight defeat.
Mangahas, the one-time PCU Baby Dolphin, finished with 16 points while Maierhofer and Bagatsing added 14 and 10 markers, respectively, to help La Salle keep its second spot in the standings at 5-1.
The Taft Avenue-based Archers flexed their muscle in the second half as Maierhofer dropped 12 markers, 10 in the third quarter, and Mangahas added seven to turn a 37-29 halftime lead to a 65-45 bubble entering the final frame.
