Blue Eagles Tame Bulldogs for No. 5

By Abac Cordero - Philippine Star - July 28, 2008

Ateneo came off an eight-day rest and zoomed to its fifth straight win, beating National U yesterday, 74-62, as it geared up for two tough assignments this week.

The Blue Eagles hardly encountered any difficulty during the game, leading by as many as 15 points and holding back the Bulldogs late but desperate comeback.

It was win No. 5 for Ateneo, which remained the only unbeaten team in the 71st UAAP season. But it will be tested this week against tall teams Santo Tomas and FEU.

“We were pretty much on a roll and all of a sudden we get eight days off. But I knew we were in pretty good shape,” said coach Norman Black inside the Philsports press room.

In the other game, Santo Tomas got off a two-game skid by stopping Adamson in overtime, 86-80. It was the Tigers’ second win in five games, while the loss was Adamson’s fourth in six games.

Ateneo is just two wins away from sweeping the first round, but Black said it’s not what they’re thinking of right now.

“We play FEU on Thursday and UST on Sunday. We shouldn’t really worry about the winning streak right now because we got two tough games coming up,” he said after dealing NU its fifth straight loss.

“Sweep? You guys really think a lot farther than I do. I’m just worried about FEU. I’m not worried about sweeping anything,” added Black, a grandslam coach in the PBA.

Meanwhile, the UAAP board will meet today to tackle issues like the UE protest of its game against FEU and the shooting incident involving Tamaraw Mac Baracael.

The board is expected to get the latest from FEU, still at a loss in search for the reasons behind the near-fatal shooting of the 6-foot-3 Baracael last Thursday.
